Import a Faceting Diagram PDF
PDF Import turns a faceting diagram PDF from GemCAD or Gem Cut Studio into an
editable .facet design, without you re-typing a single angle.
How to use it
Open PDF Import from the dashboard or the Developer's Import menu, drop your PDF into the upload area (or click Browse files…), then click Next. GemDiagram reads the file and shows you a results screen with an editable tier table — check it over, then Download .facet or Open in project to load it straight into the Developer.
Note
GemCAD and Gem Cut Studio PDFs are both supported and auto-detected — you don't need to tell GemDiagram which tool generated the file.
What gets read
PDF Import reads two things from the file and cross-checks them against each other:
- The tier table: design name, index gear (wheel), refractive index, symmetry, proportion ratios, and each tier's name, side, angle, and index positions.
- The line drawings: the crown, pavilion, and side-view panels. GemDiagram uses these to work out each tier's distance geometrically, rather than guessing from the angle alone.
Accuracy & verification
Warning
This is a close estimate, not a guaranteed match. Complex cuts may not generate accurately — verify the result against the printed diagram before you cut.
Compare the imported design's angles, index settings, and facet counts against the original PDF. If anything looks off, fix it directly in the editable tier table on the results screen before you download or open the design — you don't need to re-import to make a correction.
Warnings you may see
If GemDiagram has low confidence in part of the conversion.
Plan requirement
PDF Import is a Pro feature. See Accounts, Plans & Billing for what each plan includes.
