Rough Planner: Rough Dimensions

The first step in Rough Planner is to tell it how big your rough gemstone is.

Input fields

When you open Rough Planner, you'll see three inputs:

  • Length (mm): The longest dimension of the rough.
  • Width (mm): The second-longest dimension.
  • Height (mm): The shortest dimension (thickness).

Enter the measurements of your rough stone in millimeters. Use calipers or a ruler — precision to 0.1 mm is fine; Rough Planner doesn't need perfection.

Material and density

Below the dimensions, a Material dropdown sets the gemstone type. This is crucial — Rough Planner uses the material's density (specific gravity) to estimate the finished weight.

For example:

  • Diamond (SG 3.52) weighs much more than the same volume of Quartz (SG 2.65).
  • Rough Planner knows the density of all 22 built-in materials and uses it to convert yield % into carats.

Pick the material of your rough.

Yield percentage

Once you enter dimensions, Rough Planner estimates a rough weight (how many carats the uncut stone is). As you search for orientations, it calculates yield % — the percentage of the rough that survives as the finished cut.

A typical yield is 30–50% depending on the design and the shape of the rough. Complex designs with many facets trim more rough; simple designs with few facets waste less.

Once you've entered the rough dimensions, you're ready to move to the search step — either Auto, Tilt-search, or Manual. See Rough Planner: Auto / Tilt-search / Manual for how each works.
